Model Context Protocol (MCP) support in FileMaker 2025
What is Model Context Protocol?
Model Context Protocol (MCP is an open-source standard introduced by the AI model company Anthropic in late 2024 - full details can be found at the modelcontextprotocol.iosite. Essentially, MCP allows AI apps like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT to connect to data sources, tools and workflows to facilitate them accessing unique information to your organisation to enable them to perform tasks.
Why MCP matters for Claris FileMaker customers & developers
To try leverage the power of AI, businesses need to be able to bridge the gap between existing data silos and the next generation of large language model (LLM) tools. Despite, significant enhancements to the Claris FileMaker platform in FileMaker 2024 and FileMaker 2025 releases to make integrating with AI tools easier, there can still be a significant development effort depending on the specific API & functionality required.
Claris MCP is a new tool to bridge the gap between FileMaker and AI assistants like Claude: it acts as a translator that helps FileMaker apps communicate with LLMs without the need to for developers to learn an additional programming language or new API.
Advantages of the Claris MCP approach
- Claris MCP acts as a universal standard. There is no vendor lock in to a specific model provider or Claris Partner specific implementation to LLM integration.
- Claris MCP simplifies the implementation of AI integration. End users can ask questions or trigger actions in plain English using their existing LLM prompt interfaces. There is fine grain control over the security, permissions as business logic just as we would expect with all Claris FileMaker Apps.
How to get started with Claris MCP
Claris' official guide to get started is a available here: https://help.claris.com/en/claris-mcp-help/content/getting-started.html
To get started you will need a valid Claris ID in order to access the Claris MCP cloud workspace:
https://aiworkspace.platform.claris.com/
Your FileMaker Server will need to be accessible from the internet, the Server will need to have the FileMaker Data API and OData services enabled as well as a login with access to your data using these services configured in any files which you want to expose to the MCP connection.
How does it work?
Once you have linked the Claris MCP service to your FileMaker Server and configured your LLM client app to connect to the MCP configuration then you can interact with your custom FileMaker app by simply writing prompts, such as:
- “What’s our monthly revenue trend?”
- “Which customers haven’t placed orders in 90 days?”
- “Show me a chart of sales by region.”
- “What’s the status of Order #XYZ?”
